COMMISSIONER HALL SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS THROUGH DISPLAY OF WORK

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 15, 2005) - Lee County Commissioner Tammy Hall is supporting local artists by giving them an opportunity to display their artwork in her Fort Myers office.

The first artist to be featured - Kit Hoisington - will have her artwork displayed in the District #4 Commissioner office starting TODAY (March 15) and running through April 25 (see bio below of Hoisington).

Commissioner Hall's office is in the first floor of the Old County Courthouse, 2120 Main Street in downtown Fort Myers. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The public is welcome to come view the artwork and learn about Hoisington.

"The arts are an important part of the cultural development of our community," says Commissioner Hall. "I believe that government can play an important role in providing assistance in public awareness, developing the use of public spaces for display and interaction of art, and for the encouragement and commitment of continued financial support both public and private of all the arts."

After Hoisington's showing, other local artists will be featured at six-week intervals.

Commissioner Hall was elected to the Board of Lee County Commissioners in 2004 and serves as the Board's vice chairman. Her district includes North Fort Myers, and the central and northern portions of Cape Coral.

ABOUT KIT HOISINGTON

Kit Hoisington
www.kithoisington.com

Hoisington works in virtually all 2-D media, from oil to charcoal, and sometimes also in 3-D. Her subjects tend to be life or light. She focuses on forms that grow, natural shapes more than man-made, including the human figure, studies of fruits, flowers, vegetables and shells, and a recent series of "tree-portraits". Her landscapes invariably include water - in all its forms, from oceans to streams - most recently a series of a fish-pool with light bouncing in the ripples and reflections. Her work is painted or drawn from life or en plein air, where natural color and light make a complex and interesting interplay of forms.

Hoisington holds degrees from Cornell University and Michigan State University. She lived for 16 years outside of the USA, 12 years based in Holland and 2 each in Asia and Africa, and traveled extensively for her work (in development economics) throughout Asia, Africa and the former Soviet Union. During that time, she worked largely in watercolor and pen and ink, in travelers' notebooks. She still works in this vein, in 2003 spending time in Guanajuato, Mexico on the invitation of David Richards, former chief theater critic of The New York Times, to do pen and ink illustrations for his book about the area. In 2004, she was visiting artist/ assistant to Gale Bennett in Giverny for one of his ArtStudy and is scheduled to do the same in 2005. She and her Australian husband have been residents of Sanibel Island since returning to the USA in 2000.

"Regardless of her subject, locale or medium, however, every one of her works is a joy to behold" (Island Sun, Oct. 3 2003)

"The images, in particular the pen and ink drawings, invite the viewer to come in for a closer look down passageways, into courtyards, and half hidden places. They are, as she puts it 'outdoor equivalent of interior scenes,' conveying a sense of little known, intimate space.  The result is a diverse yet unified exhibition that showcases an artist with a broad range of talents. " (Captiva Current, Oct. 10-16, 2003)
