COUNTY SEEKING APPLICATIONS FOR MULTICULTURAL COMMITTEE

FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 29, 2005) - Lee County is seeking applications to a new advisory committee on multicultural affairs.

The committee, which was created by a new ordinance on June 14, will advise the Board of Lee County Commissioners on minority issues.

The committee will have 12 members with two being the current chairmen of the Black Affairs Advisory Board and Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board.  The other 10 will be appointed two each by the five County Commissioners.

All ethnicities can be represented on the committee, but there are specific slots for African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Haitian Americans.  Functions of the committee will be to:

1. Identify and evaluate issues common to minority communities.

2. Review and recommend alternatives to ensure open communication between the Board of County Commissioners and minority communities for promoting and fostering better understanding by the County of problems facing the minority populations.

3. Annually, develop a set of goals and objectives.

4. Annually, provide a report directly to the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners on the committee's accomplishments.
