Mar 2, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Community Relations Coordinator Voice: (239) 461-2924 Library Development Specialist Voice: (239) 461-2914 Lee County Library System Supports Read Together, Florida FORT MYERS, FL (March 2, 2005) Lee County residents are invited to participate in a statewide reading frenzy that is sweeping across Florida. A variety of programs will be presented this month and in April at Lee libraries to support the Read Together, Florida project, a part of Gov. Jeb Bush's Family Literacy Initiative that encourages Floridians to read the same book at the same time to enhance their love for reading. Library communities across the state are modeling localized projects after Bush's program, including the Lee County Library System with its new One Book, One Community Lee County Reads: "A Land Remembered" a book club just for residents in Southwest Florida. This year's selection for Read Together, Florida is Carl Hiaasen's "Hoot," a 2003 Newbery Honor Book about a young boy who moves to Florida and begins a quest to rescue burrowing owls from a neighborhood demolition. It is the second book selection for the project, launched last year with Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God." LCLS has 166 copies of "Hoot," including audio and large print editions, in its collection.
