Board Approves Moving Forward with Causeway Settlement Agreement

BOARD APPROVES MOVING FORWARD WITH CAUSEWAY SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT

FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 18, 2005) - The Board of Lee County Commissioners today approved the following items during its regular weekly meeting. They are:

Causeway Lawsuit - Approved moving forward with a formal settlement agreement to end the Sanibel Causeway litigation. The main points of the settlement: Sanibel will dedicate its 21 percent of surplus tolls to reduce discount program fees and discount tolls for users of the Sanibel Causeway with a Sanibel option transponder as long as the county dedicates its 79 percent of surplus tolls to tolls reduction. If Sanibel agrees, the two entities' staff will get together and incorporate the points into a formal settlement agreement for consideration at their Feb. 1 respective governing board meetings.

Summerlin Widening - Awarded the construction contract to widen Summerlin Road to six lanes to Pheonix Construction Services for $39.49 million. Provides county with a contractor for the widening of Summerlin Road (CR 869) from existing four lanes to six lanes beginning at the west side of the San Carlos Boulevard intersection through the north side of the Gladiolus intersection. Overpasses will be added at the intersection of Summerlin Road and Gladiolus and also at the intersection of Summerlin Road and San Carlos Boulevard.

Filter Marsh/Linear Park - Awarded construction of the Ten Mile Canal Filter Marsh & Linear Park, Phase I to Wright Construction Corp. for $2.65 million. The project includes the filter marsh, bike path, pedestrian bridge, maintenance road and associated structures as indicated on the plans and specifications.

Lehigh - Approved providing funding of $25,000 to the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Corporation for development of the Lehigh Acres Community Plan.

County Attorney - Voted to negotiate a contract with Chief Assistant County Attorney David Owen to be the next County Attorney.
