June Starts Off With Strong Sports Calendar

As summer begins in Southwest Florida, sporting events will add an economic boost to the area's hospitality industry. The Lee County Sports Authority will host over twenty events through June and July, six of which will be held this weekend.
 
The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico will once again welcome hundreds of swimmers from across the country for the USA Swimming Open Water Championship Festival to be held at Lynn Hall Memorial Park (Fort Myers Beach) from June 2-5, 2005. The focal point of the event will be the USA Swimming 5K, 10K and 25K Open Water National Championships, as each race is a qualifier for the World Championships.  World-class swimmer Chris Thompson, who finished second in the 800 and 1500 meter freestyle at the 2005 World Championship Trials, will compete in the 5K event. Next up will be the 2005 USA Rugby Women's National Championships. Southwest Florida's own Lady Hammerhead Rugby Club will be the host club. Lee County's baseball diamonds will play host to the USSSA Baseball 16 & 18-year-old State Championships this weekend. The tournament will be played at Terry Park from June 3-5, 2005.  Games start at 3:00 PM on Friday, and at 9:00 AM both Saturday and Sunday.  Local baseball club, Crusader Baseball, will be hosting the event.  For more information, contact Scott Brown at (239) 851-0547.
 
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and USA Volleyball have teamed up to hold their third annual AAU Junior Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Sandarc Condominium Complex (6666 Estero Boulevard, Fort  Myers Beach - next to the Holiday Inn Fort Myers Beach).
