Lee County is home to several historic districts. Within these districts, properties are classified as either contributing or non-contributing:

Contributing Properties - These buildings are historically significant, architecturally exceptional, or directly associated with the historical era of the district.

Non-Contributing Properties - Typically built after the district’s historical period, these structures do not contribute to its historical integrity.

Permit Requirements for Historic Properties

For historic resources (specific buildings and histroic districts) designated under the Historic Preservation Ordinance, specific regulations apply:

  • Certificate of Appropriateness (COA)
Before applying for a building, moving, or demolition permit for a historic resource, applicants must first obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness.

  • An approved COA must accompany all permit applications for designated historic buildings or districts.
