Frequently Asked Questions about LEE GROWS

Q What Local governments will be discussed?
There are approximately 165 taxing authorities in Lee County, such as 20 independent fire districts, 5 city governments, and the school board.  However, LeeGROWS examines the Lee County Board of County Commissioners and the offices it funds.

Q What is the purpose of the program?
The LeeGROWS program follows the money.  In doing so, you will have speakers and tours of approximately 40 departments and facilities, including the Lee County Sheriff, the Medical Examiner, the Property Appraiser, the Clerk of Courts, the Tax Collector, and the Supervisor of Elections.

Q Who typically are the speakers who make each department’s presentations?
Most presentations are done by the staff of the department who does the “hands-on” work.  LeeGROWS classes usually meet several elected officials and one County Commissioner.

Q As a LeeGROWS participant, will I be sitting in a classroom for 5 weeks?
Several of the presenters are “on-site” at one of the facilities.  Tours of the facilities are given.  There will be time for a brief question and answer period for each of the presentations.

Q Will I be able to discuss and debate the issues of the day with staff?
LeeGROWS is intended to show participants the daily operation of Lee County government to see how tax dollars are spent.  Citizens who are interested in discussing or debating issues can attend weekly Board of County Commissioners meetings that allow citizen input, call and write letters to your elected officials, be on one of the County Commissioners’ over 99 advisory committees, write letters to the editor of your favorite newspaper, take advantage of blogging and chat rooms on the internet, etc.

Q How can I register for the classes?
You may register on-line by clicking the ‘Class Schedule & Registration’ link, by phone at (239) 533-2737, mail the registration form to LeeGROWS Coordinator, Lee County Government-Public Resources, P. O. Box 398, Fort Myers, Fl., 33902-0398, or fax the registration form to (239) 485-2149.

Q After I register, what happens next?
A confirming e-mail or letter will be sent to advise you that you are registered in the class you have selected.  Approximately two weeks before your class begins, you will receive “start” information, such as maps, where to park, lunch details, etc.

Q If I know that I am going to miss one or two classes, can I still attend the other days?
Yes

Q Can I make up missed sessions?
Yes   Make up information will be provided to you in your welcome package.

Q Can individuals with limited mobility attend the LeeGROWS program?
Absolutely.  We are flexible in accommodating individuals with limited mobility.  Numerous participants with canes, walkers, and wheelchairs have attended the LeeGROWS program.

Q Is there a lot of walking involved?
There are tours and changing of buildings each week.  Some days involve more walking than others.  For those individuals who are unable participate on some specific tours, they can stay in the presentation classroom or stay seated on the bus.  99% of past LeeGROWS participants have been able to handle the amount of walking.

Q Do you cancel many sessions because of weather?
Except for severe weather such as a hurricane, this is a ‘rain or shine’ program.
