Buckingham is a rural community located east of I-75, south of the Orange River and north of Lehigh Acres. Established as the Rural Community Preserve, Buckingham’s community planning effort seeks to preserve the existing rural and agricultural land use pattern, protect the community’s unique historical and environmental values, and provide for rural residential areas. The Buckingham community works to achieve these outcomes through community planning efforts that implement:
- Buckingham Community Plan and Lee Plan Goal 17 support the community’s rural and historic character, agricultural-based economy, natural resources, and visually attractive environment.

The owner or agent applying for the following types of county approvals must conduct one public informational session within the community plan area prior to obtaining a finding of sufficiency.
- Planned development
- Conventional rezoning, special exception or variance
