Scott Guelcher Art Display in Commissioner Hall's office
|
Lee County Commissioner Tammy Hall is supporting local artists by giving them an opportunity to display their artwork in her Fort Myers office on the first floor of the Old County Courthouse, 2120 Main Street in downtown Fort Myers.
Scott Guelcher will show his work in the District 4 Office until July 26, 2013. The public is welcome to stop by and view the 13 pieces and learn more about the artist. Please call 533-2226 to confirm office hours for viewing the artwork.
"The arts are an important part of the cultural and development of our community” says Commissioner Hall. “I believe that government can play an important role in public awareness, developing the use of public spaces for display and interaction of art, and for the encouragement and commitment of continued financial support both public and private of all the arts.”
Commissioner Hall is the recipient of the Angel of the Arts Award – Business Sponsor 2009. She was elected to the Board of Lee County Commissioners in 2004 and re-elected in 2006. Her district includes North Fort Myers and the central and northern portions of Cape Coral. For more information on this program, please contact Patty Pirog, Executive Assistant, at 239-533-2226.
A Statement from the artist:
“I paint random everyday objects that represent one of three themes: People, Places, or Things. My paintings allow the viewer to experience personal meaning which transforms the objects from ordinary to extraordinary.” – Scott Guelcher
“The paintings juxtapose the obvious with the obscure” – Florida Weekly
"Now you can look at a Guelcher painting and you know instantly: "That's a Guelcher painting." It's the same as looking at a Matisse or a Picasso – those artists had a style all their own." - Terry Tincher, Owner Space 39 Gallery
Scott Guelcher’s unique style of art has become well known in Southwest Florida. This blend of Pop Art Images and abstract backgrounds has attracted galleries to frequently display his artwork. Throughout his rising career as an artist he has received local and international recognition for his artwork. He has received awards and grants for his art including the 2008 Angels of the Arts Award for Best “New” Artist, being selected as one of ten artists from the State of Florida to attend the Mac: Model for Artists Career Development Workshop in St. Petersburg, Florida, an invitation to a Marketing and Promoting your work workshop in Tequesta, Florida funded by a National Endowment of the arts grant through the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs and run by the Creative Capitol Foundation of New York City (a subsidy of the Andy Warhol Foundation that supports individual artists), and Arts and Culture Grants from the City of Fort Myers in 2008 and 2009. In addition to being an artist, Scott was the event chair for Art Royale 2008, the signature fundraiser for the Lee County Alliance of the Arts in Fort Myers and currently teaches art at Island Coast High School. Scott is always looking for new opportunities to educate and inspire the community through the arts. He is always trying to give back to the community through philanthropy by donating works of art to charity fundraisers for different causes. He promoted some global subjects during his span as an artist, specifically a solo exhibition titled “Bikinis and Bombs”. This show was about the testing of the hydrogen bomb by the United States government conducted in the Marshall Islands on Bikini Atoll. The show gained local and international recognition. His exhibitions, publications, and collections enrich the talent and education he has achieved. Scott will continue to draw on issues in the local community and global community as the inspiration for his artwork. His latest series of works is an “Abstract” series and continues to work on his “People, Places, and Things” series.

Volunteers Needed to Walk Dogs
|
Lee County Domestic Animal Services is in need of energetic, committed individuals to walk and exercise dogs at the shelter. Anyone interested should attend a brief meeting at the shelter on Saturday, June 15th at 10:30 am.
Attendees will get a brief overview of the program and have a chance to observe current volunteers during their daily interactions with the dogs. Dog walkers also assist potential adopters in selecting the pet that best suits their lifestyle.
“The medium to large-size dogs desperately need interaction to relieve boredom and allow them a chance to play and exercise,” says Ria Brown, Volunteer Coordinator. “It’s a tough job but one’s that’s as rewarding for the volunteer as it is for the dogs,” she adds.
The shelter is located at 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers, off Six Mile Cypress Parkway, next to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Please enter through the Lost and Found Pet Center (orange bldg. entrance). To review more details about the program prior to the meeting, go to www.LeeLostPets.com and click on the Volunteer tab at the top of the page. 5/23/2013|
Electric utility work to affect portions of North Fort Myers preserve trail
|
Lee County Electric Cooperative (LCEC) will be conducting work on an easement through Prairie Pines Preserve in North Fort Myers that may restrict access to portions of the 18-mile trail system from now through this summer.
Equestrians, hikers and bird watchers should check www.Conservation2020.org or the Conservation 20/20 Facebook site before visiting the 2,654-acre preserve, which is managed by Lee County Parks & Recreation. Due to the nature of LCEC’s work, the access point from the parking area to the preserves’ larger trail system may open and close intermittently.
Powerlines will be installed adjacent to an existing easement – an old railroad bed – that runs north-south through the preserve. The infrastructure will include concrete pads, poles and conductor for the transmission. Some trees and shrubs will be removed. However, project designers were able to use the existing driving access and locations void of vegetation due to the old railroad line. Impact to the cleared area and wetlands will be greatly reduced.
“Currently tree chipping equipment and other heavy equipment is present – and that may decrease the peaceful nature experience for equestrians with horses more used to tranquil rides,” said Laura Greeno, a Conservation 20/20 land stewardship coordinator. Preserve visitors should maintain a safe distance when machinery is in use.
The project is timed to coincide with the wet season, which typically leads to lower use of the preserve.

Public Participation Welcome in Search For County Attorney
|
Lee County’s BoCC county attorney recruitment web page has been developed to provide the public with information about the search for a new county attorney, and it’s now open for people who want to submit questions for the candidates who will be considered for the position. This is similar to a web page set up earlier this year for the public to submit prospective county manager interview questions.
The Lee County Board of County Commissioners is tentatively scheduled to interview the finalists for the county attorney position in early August.
Additional information included on the county attorney recruitment website includes a timeline, information on the search firm facilitating the recruitment, a county attorney profile and more.
With the inclusion of this question submittal link, the public will be able to compose and submit for consideration questions that the interview panel may present to the final candidates. The link and guidelines for question submittal, can be found at

From Pam Keyes, P.E. Director Lee Co. Utilities
Lee County Natural Resources has completed their spoils handling work at the site.
LCU has a contractor on site to begin demolition and removal of the vertical structures. This work is expected to be completed within 6 months, Sept 2013. The site will remain rough, and sodding open areas is not part of the demolition contract. All concrete pads, foundations and buried piping (down to a certain depth) are budgeted for removal next FY 13/14, at which time the site can be graded out and final seeded/sodded. A firmer schedule has not been established. We are working with FDEP to determine what we will be required to abandon/remove the existing outfall pipe. We have included budget to grout the pipe from landside. If additional work is required by FDEP, the project budget will be modified.
