This preserve is located in east Lee County, between the Lee County Mosquito Control District airstrip and Harns Marsh, a surface water management area operated by the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District (LAMSID).

The preserve is a joint partnership between Conservation 20/20, which owns the land, and LAMSID, which will fund hydrological improvements to the site. Once this project is completed, a trail system will be established within the preserve for public access. The plan is for this trail system, funded by Conservation 20/20, to connect West Marsh Preserve and its cypress, oak hammock and pine flatwood forests to the adjacent Harns Marsh.

This preserve will be used primarily as a storm water management area to provide critical floodwater storage and water quality benefits to the Orange River, which ultimately flows into the larger Caloosahatchee River. This area is also well-known as an exceptional location in Lee County for bird-watching.
