This preserve is located in Bokeelia, on the northeastern side of Pine Island. The primary natural communities of this preserve are tidal swamp, mangroves and spoil area. A portion of the land was previously used as a palm tree grove.
Restoration projects received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Coastal & Heartland National Estuary Partnership (formerly the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program). This included the removal of palm trees from the palm grove, treating invasive exotic plants, and filling in some of the mosquito ditches onsite. These efforts resulted in a better functioning and more natural ecosystem.
