What: Notice of upcoming road closure on San Carlos Boulevard east of U.S. 41 Road to Repair and Replace the Railroad Crossing

Where: San Carlos Boulevard (San Carlos Park area) east of U.S. 41 Road at the Railroad Crossing

When: Starting August 18, 2003 after 9:00a.m. and continuing for at least one (1) week (depending on weather conditions)

Details: Starting on August 18th, both the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes on San Carlos Boulevard will be closed to all traffic at the railroad crossing, which is east of U.S. 41 Road between Iris and Matanzas Roads. This closure is necessary for the Seminole Gulf Railway to replace their crossing of San Carlos Boulevard. The closure is expected to remain in place for a period of one (1) week, but may last longer due to weather or other unforeseen conditions.

Suggested Travel Routes (Eastbound Traffic):  Due to the nature of work requiring a complete closure of both directions of traffic, detour routes will be established during the course of construction activity. The principal detour for eastbound San Carlos Boulevard traffic from northbound U.S. 41 Road will be to proceed to the signalized intersection at Sanibel Boulevard and U.S. 41 Road, then east along Sanibel Boulevard to Lee Road, south on Lee Road to San Carlos Boulevard. Eastbound San Carlos Boulevard traffic from southbound U.S. 41 Road will be directed to proceed east at the Sanibel Boulevard signalized intersection, and follow the detour to Lee Road, then south on Lee Road to San Carlos Boulevard.

Suggested Travel Routes (Westbound Traffic):  The principal detour route for westbound traffic will be to proceed north on Lee Road from San Carlos Boulevard, west along Sanibel Boulevard to U.S. 41 (at signal), then south on U.S. 41 to the San Carlos Boulevard intersection.

The annual average daily traffic volumes on the principal roadways involved are:

San Carlos Boulevard (San Carlos Park E. of U.S. 41) - 4,900 vehicles per day
Sanibel Boulevard (San Carlos Park E. of U.S. 41) - 10,000 vehicles per day
