Lee County Animal Services Offers License Fee Amnesty Week

Fort Myers, Florida, 8/11/03—Lee County Animal Services is offering owners of unsterilized pets one week to purchase license tags for the same fee as sterilized pets. The amnesty week, from August 13 through August 20, is an extension of an earlier promotion allowing owners of unsterilized animals an opportunity to purchase a license for the same cost ($10) as sterilized pets. The current license fee is $25 for unsterilized pets, $10 for sterilized pets and $8 for pets that are sterilized and have a Microchip ID.

“Beginning August 25, the law will be strictly enforced,” says Scott Trebatoski, Director of Lee County Animal Services.  At that time fines may range from $75 to $100 per animal for unlicensed pets.  Dogs, cats and ferrets that do not have a current rabies vaccination will incur additional fines.  At this time Lee County Animal Services has a list of more than 5,700 unlicensed pets.  “We will begin issuing citations from this list and add more as officers begin strict enforcement the ordinance county-wide,” added Trebatoski.
