LEE COUNTY'S NEW HUMAN SERVICES COUNCIL LOOKING FOR MEMBERS

FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 25, 2003) - Those interested in possibly serving on Lee County's newly created Human Services Council have until Aug. 5 to submit applications for consideration by County Commissioners.

The Board of County Commissioners formerly approved the creation of the new public-private council July 1 and it would work similar to the way the public-private Horizon Council brings together the community's varying business and economic development interests.

This council would do the same thing in the human and social services areas.  Among other things, it would be charged with designing a community based plan for the current and future human service needs in Lee County, incorporating service coordination and resource planning.  A strategic plan would promote the strengthening of private-public partnerships, collaboration and integration of community services, and elimination of fragmented service delivery systems.

An application for appointment and more information about the council is available from the Lee County Human Services Department at (239) 652-7930, located at 83 Pondella Rd., Suite 1 in North Fort Myers.

The membership of the council will appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and initially will be composed of 29 voting members with a commissioner acting in an ex-officio capacity.  Appointments will be from the following categories:

The Council will meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month.  The first meeting is scheduled for Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the Lee County Community Development/Public Works Building, 1500 Main Street in downtown Fort Myers.
