Fort Myers, Florida, 4/11/03 - Pet Adoptathon, the weekend when animal organizations worldwide join together to find homes for thousands of shelter pets, is taking place on May 3 and 4. It promises to be bigger and better than ever!

This year two fun-filled days are planned for families and pets including:
· Pets for adoption
· Flyball and agility
· Play ball with "Rutgers," the Miracle Baseball Dog
· Meet special K-9 guest "Radar, the Bird Dog" of the Lee County Port Authority
· Free fingerprinting for kids with Lee County Sheriff's Department and McGruff, the Crime Dog
· Experts on dog training and veterinary care
· Pet vendors with the latest pet products
· Spring pet portraits
· Nationally registered Microchip Pet IDs for only $10
· Food, music and more

For a special highlight, join county commissioners and school board members for Lee County Animal Services' Animal Education Resource Library Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on May 3 at 11:00 am. Winners of the "Be Kind to Animals Kid Contest," recognizing local children who have made a difference in the lives of animals, will be announced at noon.

Lee County Animal Services takes in 13,000 animals each year. As the county's government-operated shelter, it cannot turn animals away even when the facility is at capacity. Therefore, the agency is faced with the task of finding homes for more than 9,000 pets each year that are not claimed by their owners. Pet Adoptathon 2003 is a chance to match as many homeless, but wonderful pets, as possible with new families!
