Energy Assistance Program Accepting Applications

Lee County Department of Human Services has begun accepting applications for energy assistance from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Outstanding utility bills reflecting energy usage between December 1, 2002 and March 31, 2003, will be considered, as long as limited funds remain available.

Twenty-five applications per day will be accepted on a first-come basis at The Department of Human Services, located at 83 Pondella Road, Suite 1, North Fort Myers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, applications will be taken only from applicants 60 years of age or older or disabled adult applicants who have documentation of their disability. Proof of all household income and an original utility bill is required.

Priority for all applications will be given to the elderly, disabled and households with children age 5 and under.

Effective April 1, 2003, fifteen (15) LIHEAP applications will be accepted per day for a one-time benefit on an annual basis to households who meet income and other requirements. LIHEAP's crisis component can pay up to $300.00 toward a past due bill or deposit. Please note that these funds are also limited. The program does not pay monthly utility bills. Again, Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for the elderly and/or disabled.

Income guidelines for the program are $13,470 for a household of one, $18,180 for a household of two, $22,890 for a household of three etc.
