Fort Myers, Florida, November 8, 2002— The Lee County Board of County Commissioners kicked off Lee County Animal Services’ 2nd Annual Home 4 the Holidays Campaign on November 5 with a resolution encouraging responsible pet ownership and animal adoptions from shelters during the holidays. From November 12 through January 5 Animal Services will join 1050 shelters across the country to bring hundreds of homeless dogs and cats together with loving adoptive families. Last year Animal Services’ special adoption events set new records and succeeded in finding homes for 420 orphaned pets!
The
event is a departure from the traditional practice of shelters suspending pet
adoptions during the holidays, which are normally very hectic.
In the past it was considered a bad time to introduce a new pet into the
household. However, many shelters
euthanize more animals during this period due to overcrowding while missing out
on the season when most people seek to add a companion animal to their family.
To capitalize on this opportunity, Animal Services
has planned many activities and promotions with an emphasis on pet adoptions and
responsible pet ownership. They
will present their popular “Puppy Hugging Booth” at the Fort Myers
Winterfest featuring adoptable pets while joining other non-profit agencies
showcasing their causes. A special
adoption day at the shelter, holiday pet photos, and a Low-cost Vaccination and
Microchip ID Clinic are also among the events.
Pets adopted during the campaign will go to their new homes with a complementary toy and holiday meal. Adopters will receive pet care information, discounts for pet products, and two months of free pet insurance. Adoption fees include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations and a Microchip ID. There is no better time to bring a new friend home!
