FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FORT
MYERS, Fla. (June
6, 2002) – Lee County’s Visitor & Convention Bureau (VCB) and Parks
& Recreation Department will host a Major League Baseball scouting event at
Terry Park this Saturday (June 8) and Sunday (June 9) – the first of six such
competitions to be held through November.
The
event is open to the public, and admission is free.
Called
“Perfect Game Sunshine Showcase,” more than 250 major league hopefuls will
compete in a series of workouts and games before Major League Baseball scouts.
Perfect Game is the #1 scout-reporting agency for Major League Baseball.
It
is estimated the six events will pump $2.1 million into Lee County’s economy,
primarily through room nights at local hotels.
The VCB also is working with Perfect Game to hopefully open a satellite
office in Lee County.
“We
can’t say enough about how the VCB has assisted Perfect Game in establishing
this program in Florida,” said Perfect Game President Jerry Ford.
The
Perfect Game Showcase begins at 8 a.m. each day.
For a detailed schedule, contact Gary Ewen at the above phone numbers.
Over the last four years,
the VCB, through its Sports Marketing Program, and Lee County Tourist
Development Council have funneled more than $500,000 to local organizations and
venues to promote and market sporting events in Lee County.
