MARTY HARRITY APPOINTED TO SMART GROWTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE

FORT MYERS, Fla. (February 27, 2002) – Bob Janes, Chairman of the Lee County Board of County Commissioners, has appointed the Honorable Marty Harrity, City Councilman for the City of Sanibel, to replace Wayne Daltry on the Smart Growth Advisory Committee.  This vacancy became available when Wayne Daltry was named as the county’s new Smart Growth Director.  

Harrity, a graduate of Philadelphia University with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration, is a partner in two local restaurants, one in Fort Myers Beach, The Beached Whale, and another on Sanibel, the Island House and Bungalow.  Harrity has served four years on the Sanibel Planning Commission.  Currently, he is serving a four-year term on the Sanibel City Council, where he also represents Sanibel on the Horizon Council and as a previous member of the Lee County Smart Growth Task Force. 

“The goal of Smart Growth is to achieve a good balance between community livability, economic viability, and environmental sensitivity,” Janes stated.  “Marty’s successful career in sales and marketing will provide him with the tools and experience necessary to serve as an effective member of the Smart Growth Advisory Committee.  I look forward to having Marty’s business expertise and community perspective on the various issues that will come forward for discussion in this committee.” 

Marty Harrity is married to Brenda and they have four children – Melissa, Ashley, Clark and Joe.  

Marty Harrity is the final appointment to the 17-member Smart Growth Advisory Committee.  School Board Chairwoman Jane Kuckel and Janes also are committee members, and County Manager Don Stilwell is an ex-officio member.  The other members of the Smart Growth Advisory Committee along with Marty Harrity are: Carol Hudler, Dennis Gilkey, Brian Griffin, William F. Hammond, Lee Ford, Arnold Rosenthal, Ellen Lindblad, Ed Houck, Steve Maxwell, John Witt, Tim Kenny, Kate English, Jack Eichenberg, Robert Fowler, Kuckel, Janes and Stilwell.
