NEW SIDEWALKS CONSTRUCTION APPROVED IN UNINCORPORATED LEE COUNTY

FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 8, 2002) – The Board of Lee County Commissioners today approved the construction contract for more than 1.6 miles of pedestrian sidewalks in various parts of Lee County.

The contract is with Gulf Paving Inc. for $334,293. The sidewalks are to be completed within six months.

They are:

  1. Lee Rd. from San Carlos Blvd. to Sanibel Blvd. (0.2 miles).
  2. Fordham Street from Woodland Blvd. to Crystal Dr. (0.4 miles).
  3. Ballard Rd. from Ortiz Ave. to Nuna Ave. (0.4 miles).
  4. Ballard Rd. from Marsh Ave. to Palmetto Ave. (0.6 miles).
  5. Sanibel Blvd./Seminole Gulf Railway crossing
  6. Constitution Circle/Seminole Gulf Railway crossing

The balance of the $1.4 million allocated last year will be included in a future construction contract for sidewalks along portions of Stringfellow Road and Leeland Heights Boulevard. The allocation for this year will be coming to the Board sometime in February or March.

Lee County allocates a little more than $1 million a year for the construction of sidewalks and bikepaths based on recommendations by the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which is made up of local residents. Currently, the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee has outstanding requests for future projects of $18.8 million, which would build 48 miles of bicycle and pedestrian paths.

For more information about how to request that a project be considered, contact Andy Getch at 479-8510.
