Local Animal Shelters Host Fall Pet Fest!

Fort Myers, Florida, 9/14/01—Lee County Animal Services, the Humane Society of Lee County and the Animal Refuge Center are teaming up to host the first annual Fall Pet Fest ! The event will be held October 13, 2001 at the Lee County Sports Complex from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Lee County’s three shelters are partnering for this event to bring the pet community together. The goal is to increase awareness for the need to find homes for Lee County’s homeless pets and to educate pet owners on proper pet ownership. In the process, a fun day of activities and camaraderie will be provided. In 2000 more than 15,000 pets ended up in local shelters. Due to pet overpopulation, over 9,000 of these animals were euthanized. It is the agencies’ hope to have every available home filled by a shelter pet. Many wonderful pets in a variety of breeds, colors and sizes from the shelters, as well as local rescue organizations, will be available for adoption.

In addition, pet owners can bring their own pets out for a day of fun and activities. Highlights include a Pet Fashion Show hosted by NBC-2’s Kellie Burns and with outfits courtesy of PETsMART. There will be contests with prizes for the Best Costume, Smallest Dog, Biggest Dog, Pet & Owner Look-A-Like, and Best Trick. Fly Ball demonstrations by the Palm City Punchers and demonstrations from Search & Rescue Dogs will also be featured among the activities. A Pet Photographer will even be on hand to take pet portraits. Those pet owners interested in some expert advice can visit with veterinarians, dog trainers, pet sitters and more plus see lots of accessories and products for pampered pets.
