Recent Rabies Cases Prompt Lee County Animal Services to Encourage Pet Vaccinations at Annual Clinic
Fort Myers, Florida, 4/3/01—Lost and unvaccinated pets are an important safety concern everyday at Lee County Animal Services. However, it is especially critical this year as Animal Services prepares to celebrate its annual Pet ID and Vaccination Clinic in honor of Tag Day. Lee County has recently had two confirmed cases of rabies in Lehigh Acres and Animal Services and Health Department officials know how important it is for pet owners to have their pets vaccinated against the disease.
All pet owners are encouraged to attend the clinic if their pets are not up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. This is important, not only for pet health but to protect family members from exposure to the fatal disease.
Tag Day, sponsored nationally by the American Humane Association, is used to encourage pet owners to be sure their pet is wearing its license tag. Adding an ID tag or microchip will assist local agencies in identifying and returning lost pets. ID tags improve an animal’s chances of getting a return trip home.
Locally, Lee County Animal Services plans to celebrate Tag Day by holding a Pet ID and Vaccination Clinic at the Shelter located within Six-Mile Commercial Park off Six-Mile Cypress Parkway on Saturday, April 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Citizens will be able to purchase a Lee County license ($5.00) for their pet and a nationally registered microchip ID for $15.00. Animal Services’ veterinarian in cooperation with local veterinarians will offer $5.00 rabies shots and other low-cost vaccinations.
For more information on Tag Day, call Lee County Animal Services at (941) 432-2083.
